Broiled Grapefruit with Yogurt + Honey

2011-04-30 15.59.31

There is no denying that it is full blown citrus season right now and I have probably consumed my weight in our juicy, fleshy friends from Florida already this season.  However delicious a plain orange or grapefruit is, right now I am in the mood to figure out some creative ways to enjoy them.

I can think of a lot of friends who are going to like this one because it produces minimal dirty dishes (You in particular, Clare hahahaha).

Broiling a grapefruit is so easy and you can add a bunch of stuff on the top to make it a fancy experience.  I stuck with the basics – some sugar, cinnamon, vanilla yogurt and a pinch of fresh grated nutmeg.  Sweet, sour and spicy all at once!

What will you need?

1 grapefruit, halved and seeded

Yogurt, Honey

A pinch of sugar, cinnamon and grated nutmeg (quantities are up to you!)

An oven

How do you make it?

Turn your oven’s broiler on high and allow to heat.

Cut your grapefruit in half and first admire the glory.  Maybe smell it a little bit and take some pics.

Sprinkle the top with sugar and cinnamon.

Broil on high for about 10 minutes, just until the edges start to get dark.  Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 5 minutes.

Sprinkle some more sugar on top, add a spoonful of yogurt to each, drizzle some honey (make sure to get some on the plate, too to make it look fancy) and then grate some nutmeg on top if you’re feelin it.

Just an fyi, this recipe makes excellent grapefruit juice, too.  I got sick of trying to eat it with a spoon so I got impatient and just squeezed the whole thing in a glass and drank it.  Sorry I’m not sorry!
